Introduction to the Pedsdoctalk Podcast

I am a Pediatrician and momma on a mission to educate and inspire modern parents.

In this episode, find out what motivated me to start Pedsdoctalk on Instagram and ultimately expand to this podcast.

00;00;07;03 – 00;00;25;15

Dr. Mona

Hey, everyone, welcome to the first episode of the PedsDocTalk podcast. I am Doctor Mona Amin and I am just so excited you’re here. Thank you for spending your time with me. Whether you’re getting ready for your day, attempting to get a coat onto your screaming child, commuting, escaping for a moment, or winding down for the day.

00;00;25;17 – 00;00;48;07

Dr. Mona

I know your time is precious, so thank you for spending it with me. I am a general pediatrician working in private practice. As most of you know, if you’ve come over from my Instagram account, Pedes Doc Talk and I am on a mission to educate and inspire modern parents. Look, I am right there with you. I’m also a new mom, and I get the struggles because I’m living in right now too.

00;00;48;10 – 00;01;12;07

Dr. Mona

Modern parenting is not easy. There just seems to be too much information and judgment. Do this. Don’t do this. And it honestly can be very exhausting at times. I was finding that so many of my families were coming into my office with the sentiment, and I decided to create a platform where I could share educational content and inspiration for families to remind them that they’re doing a good job.

00;01;12;09 – 00;01;32;09

Dr. Mona

I do believe that there is a way to stay informed, but also reduce that anxiety that parenting can have. And that’s why I’m here. I really want to share so much with all of you. With the experience I’ve gained as a pediatrician and now as a new mom. So I started Pedes Doc talk for a few, met for a few major reasons.

00;01;32;12 – 00;01;54;13

Dr. Mona

First thing was, I was finding that one common trend that was happening was that parents have a lot of questions and they would want more time with their pediatrician. And unfortunately, in our current health care system, time is limited. And because of this lack of time, you’re often left turning to the internet, which is fine to some degree, but it can be overwhelming and filled with a lot of misinformed.

00;01;54;19 – 00;02;24;05

Dr. Mona

And I realized this was happening over and over. And although I’m not your child’s doctor, I wanted to be able to educate families across the world on common concerns. I hear parents bring up at my visits. I believe that education is empowering and empowered. Parenting is knowing that you are making the right choices for your child. I was also burning out, and I was burning out because I just felt that I didn’t have the time I wanted to have with my families.

00;02;24;11 – 00;02;44;08

Dr. Mona

In this current health care model. I ran a poll on my Instagram, and one of the common things that parents, responded with was they wish they had more time with their pediatrician, and they just often felt rushed. This is my way of giving me more time to tell you guys all the things I want to say in regards to various topics.

00;02;44;14 – 00;03;07;29

Dr. Mona

It’s my passion project. It’s bringing my passion back to pediatric medicine. I’m going to be able to share all the things that I can’t share within the walls of my office, and it’s going to be honest, it’s 100% me and it’s not just textbook education. I obviously will give you guys evidence based medicine. And what that means, if you’re not familiar, is I’m going to say that, you know, there’s research studies that show this or not.

00;03;08;01 – 00;03;27;04

Dr. Mona

But besides the evidence based, I’m also going to be giving you real life practical experience with my own patients and my own son. And I believe it’s really important to do this because it’s easy for us to say, do this and do this, but I really want to be able to give you guys the realistic expectations that I have for my families.

00;03;27;05 – 00;03;56;13

Dr. Mona

Having gone through similar experiences. I also believe that so much of our health habits as adults begin in childhood. So many preventable medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and high cholesterol can be impacted by lifestyle choices that can absolutely begin in childhood. Of course, there are genetic components to all these things, but there are also choices that we make that are largely established in childhood and adolescence that have a huge effect on our adult adulthood.

00;03;56;15 – 00;04;17;20

Dr. Mona

So, for example, having healthy sleep habits, having a healthy relationship with food, and also a good body image, prioritizing physical activity, and managing stress in a healthy way, this can all lay a great foundation for a healthy life, and it doesn’t have to be time consuming. It’s just small things we can do as parents to help our children.

00;04;17;23 – 00;04;39;13

Dr. Mona

So I’m going to be sharing. I’m going to be sharing parenting tips from my own experience with my patients and their families, and also just through interviewing experts. I also really believe in modeling good behavior. So of course, if we want our child to be able to handle their emotions in a positive way, if we want our child to be eating healthy, we also have to model that good behavior as well.

00;04;39;15 – 00;04;59;18

Dr. Mona

I also just found that my generation, our generation of parents, I was just finding that everyone was feeling super anxious about their child. On my Instagram, I also ran a poll asking my followers how many parents felt that they were overly anxious about their child, and about 60% of the respondents said that they were sometimes to the point of not being able to fall asleep.

00;04;59;20 – 00;05;18;22

Dr. Mona

And I’m not sure why this is happening in modern parenting. I’m not sure if it’s because of social media, or if it’s because of the internet or what it is, but I was having this palpable feeling of anxiety when parents were walking through my door. What we do is hard work, and being constantly worried about your child can remove the joy of being a parent.

00;05;18;22 – 00;05;40;03

Dr. Mona

So I’m on a mission to reassure you guys. I’m going to give you examples of when to worry about major topics, give you education, and reassure you that you are doing everything right. Lastly, I really just want to inspire you guys. I am also a new mom and my son Ryan, who was born in December. He is my world.

00;05;40;10 – 00;06;03;22

Dr. Mona

My initiation into motherhood was not what I expected, as we had a traumatic delivery and seeing my son in the NICU and navigating the health care system with him has been. I opening for me. We are healing through the trauma day by day, but through all we’ve been through, I hope to inspire you all. From what I’ve learned and what I continue to learn as a new mother with a newborn with medical needs.

00;06;03;24 – 00;06;27;23

Dr. Mona

I hope that through my experience as a pediatrician taking care of so many different types of families, I’ll be able to inspire you to be the best version of yourself so you can be a better parent for your child. I started my Instagram page PedsDocTalk for these reasons. It’s where I share reliable and easy to digest content on the most popular topics in pediatric medicine and share my insight as a pediatrician and mother.

00;06;27;23 – 00;06;54;12

Dr. Mona

And this podcast is an extension of that. It’s where I’ll be able to discuss topics that don’t exactly fit the character limit on an Instagram post. So every week I’ll be sharing my personal perspective of motherhood and medicine. I’m going to be sharing educational content on your common concerns such as development behavior, sleep picky eating, potty training, common sick issues like fever, cough, the flu, and issues that are happening in the media and current events.

00;06;54;14 – 00;07;24;21

Dr. Mona

I’ll also be interviewing specialists in pediatrics and other parents for their take on popular topic. I’ll be using my Instagram as well to create content and ask you questions. So I want this to be very interactive for all of you, so make sure you follow me on Instagram if you’re not already. My goal is that as a parent, you never feel alone in your feelings or questions that you never think you are the only one who struggles, that you never think you are the only one randomly googling concerns about your child at 3 a.m. because you can’t sleep.

00;07;24;24 – 00;07;43;28

Dr. Mona

We we all do it. My hope is that the more time you spend with me, whether it be here or on Instagram, you feel more confident and empowered in the choices you make for your child. What we do as parents is extremely hard work, but it is the most rewarding role we will ever have. And there’s going to be bad days.

00;07;43;28 – 00;08;08;01

Dr. Mona

There’s going to be good days. We’ll do things that we’re not proud of. We’re going to lose our cool, and we’re going to second guess our choices. And this is a natural evolution of being a parent. We are human, but it’s through raising children and teaching them that we learn about ourselves. Being a parent will show you your insecurities, your weaknesses, and your strengths, and it’s important that as you raise a child, you also grow yourself as an individual.

00;08;08;03 – 00;08;34;02

Dr. Mona

I want to remind you that through all of it, you are doing a great job. The mere fact that you worry about being a good parent means that you already are one. Thank you for joining me on this journey. I’m going to be releasing episodes every Monday, so please make sure to subscribe to this podcast, review the episodes, share it with a friend, share it on Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, Facebook, whatever social media platform you like, please share it.

00;08;34;10 – 00;08;44;13

Dr. Mona

And if you’re not already, make sure to follow me at PedsDocTalk on Instagram. Lots of love to all of you! I cannot wait to get started. Until next time. Talk to you guys soon.
