The importance of choosing the right skincare products for your child with eczema

In honor of Eczema Awareness Month, I welcome Claire Ryan, WaterWipes’ Medical Science Liaison, to talk about the importance of choosing the right skin care products for our children.

We discuss:

  • Why choosing the right skin care products are important for babies with eczema
  • Basic tips for managing eczema
  • Why WaterWipes is unique compared to other wipe brands or a washcloth with water
  • And so much more

00;00;08;27 – 00;00;28;10

Dr. Mona

Thank you for joining me for this week’s episode. I am excited to welcome Claire Ryan, who is Water Wipe’s medical science liaison, and we are talking about the importance of choosing the right products for your child with eczema. In honor of National Eczema Awareness Month, thank you so much for joining me today, Claire.

00;00;28;16 – 00;00;30;22

Claire Ryan

No problem. Delighted to be here.

00;00;30;25 – 00;00;34;16

Dr. Mona

Tell me a little bit more about yourself and your role at Water wipes.

00;00;34;19 – 00;01;01;07

Claire Ryan

Okay, so, I am a registered midwife. I trained in Dublin, and qualified in 2012, and I’ve worked in both Ireland and Australia as a midwife. And I started working in water rights at the start of this year as the medical science liaison. Really, my role, involves educating health care professionals about the newest skincare research and the, you know, the many benefits of, of water rights as well.

00;01;01;09 – 00;01;23;08

Dr. Mona

Oh, this is so great. And I’m so excited that we could connect and talk about what we’re going to be talking about in honor of National Eczema Awareness Month and with, you know, a brand that I use as well for my child and recommend for a lot of my families, I just think it’s such a great product. And I think parents and health care workers often forget the importance of choosing the right skincare products.

00;01;23;09 – 00;01;29;22

Dr. Mona

So tell me more about why it’s important to find the right products, especially for our children with eczema.

00;01;29;24 – 00;01;50;11

Claire Ryan

Yeah, and I absolutely agree. And I mean, you know, with babies or children with eczema, it obviously be a real worry for parents, particularly when it develops in their young baby. Obviously. And I’m sure that you’re discussing this, that it’s very common and it’s really treatable. In terms of the products that you use, they are, of course, really important.

00;01;50;14 – 00;02;14;09

Claire Ryan

Like products, like baby washes and wet wipes or baby wipes often contain a lot of unnecessary ingredients that can aggravate the delicate skin and cause, you know, more harm, particularly there if there is eczema there. You know, there are a number of products on the market, obviously, and all of them can contain a lot of different ingredients in them.

00;02;14;11 – 00;02;44;01

Claire Ryan

That can irritate, you know, the delicate skin in terms, obviously, of ways to soothe their skin if the baby’s experiencing an eczema flare up. There are lots of things that you can do. You know, the regular baths, and they say bathing your baby daily with mild cleanser and warm water, and making sure that the bath doesn’t last longer than 15 minutes, that they can rinse the baby’s skin and pat that area dry really gently after, moisturizing, you know, at least twice a day.

00;02;44;01 – 00;03;15;02

Claire Ryan

But for possible use in, like, moisturizers that are free of fragrances. You know, choosing nonirritating products and fabrics as well. So harsh soaps, may exacerbate the eczema. So where possible, it’s recommended to use, you know, minimal ingredients and then obviously to talk to their GP’s as well because of course, their GP can offer or recommend, you know, over the counter products, but they also may want to prescribe like an ointment or cream for the eczema as well.

00;03;15;04 – 00;03;37;25

Dr. Mona

Yeah. And you said a great point about the bathing. Right. And not trying to over bathe in terms of timing. And I think there is a misconception that some families feel like they can’t give their babies with eczema a bath. And absolutely you can. But the key here is you said it perfectly patting them dry afterwards versus like that, scrubbing and rubbing, just patting them dry and then moisturizing them right after is going to be really key.

00;03;38;01 – 00;03;53;11

Dr. Mona

And then of course, talking about the products that you’re choosing. What makes water wipes unique compared to other white brands. And also, you know, parents will ask, well, why can’t I just use like a cloth with water? How does water wipes compare with that as well?

00;03;53;15 – 00;04;20;08

Claire Ryan

Yeah. So I suppose the key difference in terms of water wipes versus different baby wipes products, is the fact that water wipes contain only two ingredients. So, you know, that’s in contrast to many other brands who have a number of unnecessary ingredients within them. There are, you know, wipes that are marketed as pure, that have an average of seven ingredients in them, and other bits that are marketed as natural that have an average of ten ingredients in them.

00;04;20;11 – 00;04;39;15

Claire Ryan

So you know what we would recommend when they’re choosing, baby wipe product is to flip the pack and have a look and see exactly how many ingredients are within the products, and if they recognize what that product does or what it’s used for within the product, it’s the fact that it’s the only the two ingredients within water whites.

00;04;39;15 – 00;05;10;21

Claire Ryan

And in terms of then the difference between water wipes and, cotton cloth and water. Water wipes have been specifically developed to be pure than cotton wool and water, and they’ve been recently validated by the Skin Health Alliance as being purer than cotton, wool and water. And that’s got a lot to do with the combination. The formulation of the ultra pure water that’s contained in water whites and the drug, which is a fruit extract, which means it’s really pure and delicate, for the sensitive skin.

00;05;10;23 – 00;05;16;20

Dr. Mona

And it undergoes like a purification process. Right. What is that about in terms of, what that does for the wipe?

00;05;16;23 – 00;05;53;29

Claire Ryan

Yeah. So, the product undergoes, with the water and the product undergoes a seven stage water purification process. And through that process, it removes any impurities and also softens and purifies the water. So when that water is combined with the, fruit extract, the formulation means that the product gives a deeper, more effective clean when it’s compared with cotton cloth and water, so allows, you know, a good removal of dirt and impurities from the pores in the crevices, around baby’s diaper area.

00;05;54;02 – 00;06;11;15

Dr. Mona

This is great. You know, because I think a lot of families and health educators don’t understand the difference, you know? So I love that you clarified this because, yeah, people will say, well, you can use that. You know, like a cloth with water is, something people will say to use. But this makes complete sense. And also why I feel like it works so great.

00;06;11;18 – 00;06;21;19

Dr. Mona

Again, I love water wipes. And then also, I do recommend it for families as well, especially families of sensitive skin. Yeah. How often can, families use water wipes on their baby’s skin?

00;06;21;22 – 00;06;37;06

Claire Ryan

So because, as you said there, you know, because they are so pure and they’re so gentle, there’s no limit on the amount of times that they can be used. They can be used as often as they like or are required. And they can use them all over, baby, you know, not just for the diaper area. They’re great.

00;06;37;06 – 00;06;46;09

Claire Ryan

They’re really handy to do, you know, a top to tail in between baths and, just to kind of clean off any kind of stickiness that might be on the hands or anything like that.

00;06;46;12 – 00;07;00;22

Dr. Mona

Oh, this is great. And, in honor of National Eczema Awareness Month, the product made the National Eczema Association, they got their seal of acceptance. So what about this product? Allow them to get that seal of acceptance.

00;07;00;24 – 00;07;25;04

Claire Ryan

So we’re actually the only wet wife, to be awarded the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance, which is great when it’s due to the purity of the product, as we’ve mentioned, because our whites are made using only purified water, just a drop of fruit extract and that ensures that the baby’s delicate skin is cared for with minimal risk of causing an eczema flare up.

00;07;25;06 – 00;07;44;01

Dr. Mona

Oh, this is so good to know. And I think, like we said, it’s just so important when we’re choosing skincare products for our family and especially our children with eczema or sensitive skin. Finding the right ones are so important, and it just sounds like, you know, I love that I got the seal of acceptance. But even just from personal use, I can attest to the fact that it is a great product.

00;07;44;01 – 00;08;06;08

Dr. Mona

And it’s also nice to know that there really is no limit. Like we talked about so many of my families who have babies with eczema worry about overusing certain products. And so like you said, it’s just so nice to know that because of the way it’s purified and the fact that it only has two ingredients, it really can be used regularly without that worry of, you know, overusing for baby sensitive skin.

00;08;06;10 – 00;08;08;07

Claire Ryan

Yeah, absolutely.

00;08;08;09 – 00;08;11;18

Dr. Mona

What would be your final message for everyone listening today?
